I have a bit of a problem. I think we’re all guilty of hoarding certain things, and my thing happens to be glass jars (ok, that’s not my ONLY thing…). I simply cannot throw away an empty jam or mustard jar. Spice jars, tahini, harissa, you name it. Our friends were in town with their baby recently, and you can bet I had my sights set on those adorable little baby food jars. I call it a problem, but that’s not entirely fair. I do actually USE the jars! They’re perfect for quick pickles, small batches of jam, salad dressings, etc.
I realized that maybe I had a few too many when I started running out of storage space. Don’t worry, I didn’t throw them away (much to my husband’s dismay). I turned them into this pretty upcycled glass jar centerpiece.
I looked for jars in assorted shapes and heights. I also purposefully picked a few that could fit votive candles and a few that would be make better vases. You can design your centerpiece to only hold flower or only candles, if you prefer. I wanted to tie the centerpiece in with the rest of my home decor by adding some metallic accents, so I painted a few jars with metallic leaf paint in silver and copper. But you can certainly leave them plain! You can also paint the wood base if you want. I usually have a lot of color on my table when I entertain, so I wanted to leave the wood simple.
What you’ll need:
A finished piece of rectangular wood
Assorted small glass jars, labels removed
Superglue
Optional supplies:
Metallic leaf paint and a paintbrush
What to do:
Optional first step: paint a few (or all) of the jars with metallic leaf paint. Let dry.
Decide how you want to arrange the jars on the board.
Add a few drops of superglue to the bottom of each jar, set into place on the board, and let dry.
Add flowers and/or votive candles, set on your table and have a fabulous dinner party!
Note: If you use the metallic leaf paint on jars intended for votive candles, don’t be too thorough in painting the jar. You want some of the candlelight to be able to glow through the jar, and if you cover it to well in paint it won’t show at all!
