“Happy Independence Day! It’s strange to celebrate a patriotic holiday in a foreign country. I woke up this morning and looked at my phone and went, ‘Oh yeah, it’s the 4th of July!’ My husband still had to work and we won’t see any fireworks tonight. Our barbecue will be indoors at a Japanese version of an American barbecue restaurant. We’re in the middle of a rainy season and we can’t have grills here in Tokyo, so it’s going to be a strange day. I guess the important thing is to celebrate with friends, which we’ll definitely do!”
*I made this for dinner the other day and it was fantastic. I added arugula, which I would highly recommend.
*Delightful GIF art. Just so inspiring.*I wish I were handier with a sewing machine. Making your own kimono looks pretty easy, and I think it might be within my skill set.

“I have a theory that you extra appreciate the holidays that land sometime around your birthday. Fourth of July has always been that holiday for me- it usually extends the celebration of my birthday into at least a lounge-y day full of grilling and at most an extra few vacation days! This year the holiday crept up on me and there’s lots of planning going on around here, so we’re likely relaxing at a friend’s pool. (I know, I know, HARD LIFE.) I hope you enjoy this festive holiday with your family and friends- maybe Alyssa and I need to have a 24th of July when she’s here in San Francisco! I bet I can find sparklers!!”
* A perfect last minute add to this week’s favorites: A Beautiful Mess just posted a recipe for creating your own Homemade Non-Toxic Colored Powder!
*Lotts and Lots links to two gorgeous cabochon jewelry ideas. I LOVE the vintage feel of those turquoise drop earrings!
* I’ve been wanting a air plant for ages, but I’m worried I will kill it. I get that they’re called AIR plants for a REASON and that I probably shouldn’t doubt myself so much, but there you are. This DIY air plant wreath is so sweet and simple that it just might have changed all my fears. LOVE it.
