I’ve always loved the idea of making a “vase” out of a pumpkin but never really had a good reason to do so. We have friends visiting us in Tokyo this week, however, which provided the perfect excuse. I love having flowers around when we entertain; I think it makes our home seem warmer and more inviting. Flowers + pumpkins? Even better!
This would be lovely for Halloween or Thanksgiving, so keep it in mind over the next month! And while we have to take what we can get because it’s difficult to find pumpkins in Tokyo, I think you could make a really beautiful of an arrangement with a cinderella pumpkin or a white one.
Pumpkin Floral Centerpiece
You’ll need:
a small or medium-sized pumpkin
a bowl or vase that will fit inside the pumpkin
a pencil
floral foam, a frog or floral tape
enough flowers to fill the bowl or vase
1. Trace and outline of the largest part of the bowl of vase on the top of the pumpkin. You want to make sure you cut a big enough hole right from the start:
2. Cut the top of the pumpkin and clean out the inside. Treat the pumpkin as if you were going to carve it. Make sure the bowl or vase will fit in the opening:
3. Prep the bowl of vase for the florals. I created a grid out of floral tape because I don’t know where to find floral foam in Tokyo. But that would have been better suited to the arrangement I wanted to make. I had a bit of a difficult time getting any real height into my arrangement using a grid, so keep that in mind when you decide what to use!
4. Insert the bowl or vase into the pumpkin. Arrange the flowers as you like!
