This DIY silverware idea can add color to your table while upcycling tired silverware or servingware. Use vintage finds from flea markets or antique shows, or haul out your old set and give it a remodel. I found mine at the dollar store, since vintage forks and knives are a little difficult to find in Tokyo. But someday I’d love take mismatched silverware and paint the stems the same color to create a set.
Be sure to hand wash your silverware. Even with the primer, the paint can chip off if you aren’t careful with the pieces. Also, the sealant is not food-safe, so the paint should never come into direct contact with food or with your mouth. If you’re concerned, find a pattern that works well with more of a “dipped” look, where you can start the paint about halfway down the stem.
You’ll need:
Silverware or serving pieces
Paint primer
Enamel Paint
Acrylic sealer
Painter’s tape
What to do:
1. Use the painters tape to create a line in the stems where you want the paint to end.
2. Paint the primer onto the stems. Let it dry completely.
3. Paint the stems with enamel paint and let it dry completely.
4. Paint the stems with the acrylic sealer, and let dry.
5. Remove the tape, wash, and use!

I love this idea! How do they hold up in the dishwasher?

Unfortunately, I don’t have a dishwasher (I know, it’s so sad, especially for someone who cooks as much as I do!). I can only speculate that it would be fine as long as you use the topcoat. Might be worth testing one piece to see how it goes?

Are they dishwasher safe?
Alyssa says
Sorry, Rhonda, I don’t have a dishwasher! So I’m not sure. But I think it would be ok with the topcoat? Might want to test on one piece and see how it goes…
