Who says animal figures are just for kids? While these little guys make adorable cupcake or cake toppers for kids, they’re equally as delightful as gilded animal swizzle sticks for the grownups at the party. You could even theme them for the drink you’re serving! Try this Lovebird cocktail with a variety of gilded bird swizzle sticks. Ooh, or the obvious Moscow Mule! A golden donkey in my drink would just make me giggle all night long. (Yes, I understand that donkeys and mules are different, but I imagine it would be difficult to distinguish the two in a rubber figure.)
Gilded Animal Swizzle Sticks or Cupcake Toppers

Ingredients
- Small rubber animal figures or erasers
- Metallic paint and a paint brush
- Wooden skewers
- Exacto knife or small, sharp knife
- optional: superglue
Instructions
- Paint the plastic animals with the metallic paint. You may need 2-3 coats if you use acrylic paint, but I've found that liquid gold leaf or silver leaf works really well (shown in the photo).
- Use the Exacto knife to cut a slit into the bottom of the animal, wherever you want the skewer to go.
- Insert the pointy end of the skewer into the bottom of the animal. If you want it there permanently, put a dot of superglue on the tip of the skewer before inserting it into the slit.

Is the paint you used safe to put in a drink?
Alyssa says
Hi Judi, I made sure to only paint the parts that wouldn’t end up in the beverage. The bottom of the sticks are bare (I sort of faded the paint into the wood so it would look more natural).
